American Academy of Pediatrics Reaffirms Support for Gender-Affirming Care

AAP Board of Directors Votes to Uphold 2018 Policy Statement

Moira Szilagyi MD PhD FAAP, AAP President, Announces Stance

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has reaffirmed its commitment to gender-affirming care, a practice that supports the physical, mental, and emotional health of transgender and gender-diverse youth.

The AAP Board of Directors voted on Thursday to uphold the organization's 2018 policy statement on gender-affirming care, which recognizes the importance of parental support and provides guidance for healthcare providers in providing care to these individuals.

"The AAP believes that all children deserve to live in a safe and supportive environment, regardless of their gender identity or expression," said Moira Szilagyi MD PhD FAAP, AAP President. "Parents and caregivers play a pivotal role in supporting their child's gender journey, and we are committed to providing them with the information and resources they need."

The AAP's policy statement emphasizes the importance of respecting a child's gender identity and providing access to care that is tailored to their individual needs. It also calls for the elimination of discrimination and stigma surrounding gender-affirming care.
